Voices for WRJ: Parashat Bo

January 18, 2013

by Jane Oppenheim

Signs from God are featured in Parashat Bo – Plagues, marvels, wonders to know – With themes of God’s omnipotence, And of God’s remembrance. The locusts, the darkness, of Biblical days Are manifestly contemporary – in so many ways.

The horror of a school morning in Newton, Conn. Will haunt us all forever and anon. When will the madness cease? We need ways to properly police The use of guns and ammunition. And better attention to mental conditions.

Incredible storm Sandy has come and gone – and left behind Such devastation – NY, NJ never saw this kind. Rebuilding will take a very long time – Lost homes and beaches – no dunes left to climb!

Obama won re-election, though the margin was slim. Will Congress be able to cooperate with him? He can’t do the job single-handed! Our political parties need to be re-branded!

Climate, the economy, jobs, housing, education, Jihadic threats to our concept of nation. How long will we continue to live with fear? And now – we face 2013 – a brand new secular year –

WRJ, applauds and continues to support the RAC – For keeping our social conscience constantly on track! Caring about people and causes, and what is more – Encouraging the continuum and the unity that’s at our core. Women of Reform Judaism – voices raised loud As a community we are a very effective crowd!

May we continue, into this new year, and for many beyond, to lead the way in our congregational lives, and in our homes, and our communities, as WRJ celebrates 100 years of sharing and caring. Jane Oppenheim is a WRJ Board Member and member of Temple Hesed in Scranton, PA.
